Fracture of the axis (epistropheus). A 49-year-old female patient was run over by a motorcyclist. The cervical spine of the patient was tender. The x-ray shows a slightly oblique fracture of the body of the axis vertebra extending from the anterior to the middle column, as well as a fracture of the vertebral arch (“hangman’s fracture”). The left side is anteriorly dislocated by 2–3 mm. The spinal canal is not narrowed. Radiologically this is an unstable two-column fracture. The treatment consisted of a cervical collar for 2 months.Picture source: Medimage / University of Turku. By courtesy of the Finnish Ministry of Education.
