Alopecia areata. Alopecia areata affecting only a small area usually heals spontaneously. A widespread form of the condition is usually treatment-resistant. In alopecia totalis, all hair on the scalp is lost, and alopecia totalis means the loss of all hair on the entire body. Many treatments are offered, but the relation of cost, effort and risk to the potential benefit should be genuinely considered.
