The most important thing in the differential diagnostics of a subungual haematoma is to exclude melanoma. A trauma to the finger and rapid appearance of the colour suggest a haematoma. In this picture, a strip of normal-coloured lunula is already seen at the base of the nail. Should there be a hidden melanoma at the proximal nail fold it causes dark discolouration at the cuticle (Hutchinson's sign).
