Corynebacterium as such is common on the skin of the armpits, but in favourable conditions the bacterial colony may spread to the axillary hair. The sticky lumps do not come off like skin scales or deodorant residue. The putrid odour is generated by the bacteria reacting with testosterone produced by the apocrine sebaceous glands. Treatment consists of shaving off the hair, meticulous hygiene and antiseptic creams and solutions.
