Slowly expanding ringworm patch, which in this patient is scaling only very slightly, but the red colour at the margins indicating disease activity is discernable. The sample for fungal culture is thus obtained by scraping at the margin. Culture is justified because the eruption also resembles a recovering psoriasis patch or nummular dermatitis. Also subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) may start as circular patches on the upper back.
