Dermatophytes, especially Trichophyton rubrum, may sometimes cause a deep folliculitis-like infection, known as Majocchi granuloma. Immunosuppression for any cause – even due to topical application of a potent corticosteroid – increases the risk of this infection. Treatment of choice is systemic terbinafine.
