A superficial basal cell carcinoma is slow-growing and unnoticeable. An easily bleeding, slowly expanding eczematous change arouses suspicion of a basal cell carcinoma. An eczema will heal with anti-eczema therapy, whereas a basal cell carcinoma hardly responds to the treatment. Photodynamic treatment (PDT) would be particularly appropriate for this patient because the carcinoma is superficial and removal would require flap surgery.
