Sudden rise in body temperature, often malaise and red swelling are typical signs of erysipelas. In the face it may either be in the midline (origin in nose) or unilateral (origin in ear region), but the spread is not limited to the midline like in HZ. Parenteral penicillin is the drug of choice for this life-threatening, almost invariably streptococcal infection.
