Urinary retention in an elderly man was caused by prostatic hyperplasia. The height of the prostate measures 4.8 cm in a transverse ultrasonographic picture, the width measures 5.5 cm, and the length (in a longitudinal picture) measures 4.9 cm. The estimated prostatic size is 0.6 x 4.9 x 4.8 x 5.5 = 77 ml.
