Erysipelas is one of the most serious infections of the skin and subcutanoeus tissue, it is actually only the skin manifestation of a septic condition caused by pyogenic streptococci. The patient who is often elderly presents with a sudden rise of fever, often acute confusion and soon pain, redness and oedema of the affected skin site, most commonly lower extremity, that are the main clinical features. The patient should be hospitalized, and parenteral antibiotics started immediately. To prevent recurrence dermatosis should be treated. After multiple recurrences, permanent prophylactic antibiotic therapy should be considered.
