Pityriasis versicolor, a not uncommon map-like dermatosis is caused by a saprophytic yeast: Pityrosporum ovale (Malassezia furfur). The colour may vary from dull brown to more red, greyish or - especially immediately after successful therapy, whitish, because the intense fungal growth causes a temporary pigment defect in the skin area affected.
