Onychomycosis caused by the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum. The picture presents the most common form of fungal nail infection: Distal Subungual Onychomycosis (DSO). The best target for a mycology sample is the subungual active border. Pedicure is performed at prolonged intervals because of the difficulty in trimming the thickened mycotic nail.
