Ringworm, tinea corporis, is characterized by a sharp, red, scaly rim. The central area may be quiescent, but often there are follicular fungal lesions, sometimes giving rise to repeating ring structures. A specimen for mycology gives the diagnosis and often an important clue to the source of infection.
