Seborrheic dermatitis affects mainly the skin areas with the highest number of sebaceous glands, e.g. region of the nasolabial fold, the frontal skin, scalp, and midparts of the front and back of the chest. Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum ovale) may play a role in the aetiology of this common dermatitis, but the mechanism is so far under debate. Mild corticosteroids and topical antifungal drugs of the azole group (especially ketoconazole) relieve the symtoms, but there is no permanent cure.
