Chronic hand dermatitis at the base region of the thumb, on one of its favorite sites. The course of the disease is cyclic: acute vesiculopustular, severely itching phase followed by a dry, scaly period. Potent topical corticosteroids relieve the symptoms. Often a long-term course of oral tetracyclines is worth trying.
