Tinea at the root of the thigh is quite rare in a young man; more often a rash in this area is atopic dermatitis, as is the case here. The patient usually is chubby, and atopic dermatitis can also be found in other skin areas. As in tinea, the margins of an eczema can also be more active than the centre. Fungal culture is indicated.
