Urinary retention in an elderly man was caused by prostatic hyperplasia. The length of the prostate measures 4.9 cm in a longitudinal ultrasonographic picture and the height (in a transverse picture) measures 6.7 cm and the width 5.5 cm. The estimated prostatic size is 0.6 x 4.9 x 6.7 x 5.5 = 77 ml.
