Sycosis barbae, a staphylococcal infection of the skin in the mandibular region, is not uncommon. The most probable differential diagnosis is pseudofolliculitis, well known in black skin, but more common than expected in caucasians, too. The possibility of fungal infection also should be remembered (Trichophyton or Microsporum spp).
